A large fire in Levin "totally destroyed" an abandoned rest home

The third suspicious fire at an abandoned former rest home in Levin in recent months has completely destroyed the building.

According to Karen McDonald, the central shift manager for Fire and Emergency New Zealand, firefighters were summoned to the fire at the former Bupa Gardenview Rest Home, located on Bath Street, at 3:48 in the morning on Monday.

Six fire departments from Levin, Waitārere Beach, Palmerston North, Paraparaumu, Ōtaki, and Foxton were on the site at the height of the fire.

The two-story building was "totally destroyed," according to McDonald, and firefighters' main concern was putting out the fire while sparing the other properties. The building had been abandoned and was supposed to be demolished.

Craig Gold, the acting commander of Fire and Emergency NZ for Manawatū Whanganui, said that the fire had resulted in “very minor damage” to the spouting of a neighboring property behind the rest home.

But according to Gold, Wayne Bishop, the proprietor of the previous rest facility, had promised to fix it for the owners.

But according to Gold, Wayne Bishop, the proprietor of the previous rest facility, had promised to fix it for the owners.
"We're leaving workers there all day to help the owners with demolition and, I guess, to keep them safe in case something goes off."

Gold said that throughout the Christmas season, there had been some "unwanted" behavior at the property.

Gold said that there had been two arsons at the location, one of which had destroyed the upper story of the rest home in late November.

Bishop claimed at the time that there had been prior issues at the property but that he was unsure of what or who had sparked the fire.
